4 Signs you have a cockroach problem

HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY OF THESE?

1. Sighting

Seemingly obvious, but it is the first sign that you have a cockroach problem. Odds are if there is one, there a plenty more. Cockroaches are largely nocturnal so you may catch them scuttling around at night. However you may also see them during the day.

2. Droppings

Finding droppings inside your drawers, cupboards or pantry is another good sign that you’ve got unwanted guests of the cockroach type. Small roaches may leave droppings that look like black pepper. As they crawl over walls, they leave behind dark smear marks as well. Be cautious when cleaning them up as Cockroach droppings can be hazardous to your health.

3. Cockroach Eggs

Cockroaches lay capsules full of multiple eggs. If you find cockroach eggs, it is an unfortunate sign you have a cockroach infestation. These oothecae, as they are known, are actually egg casings that contain anywhere from 10 to 50 eggs. They are typically found in hidden, out-of-the-way places, and are glued into place.

4. Unusual Smell

Finally, your home may develop a strange odor when cockroaches are around. Cockroach poop has a strange and potent musty smell.  it Dead roaches also emit an odor that most people find to be unpleasant. The good news is that as soon as the pests are eliminated, the bad odor subsides.

Cockroaches are also known to carry, on their cuticle, in their gut and their faeces, disease organisms. Each cockroach may typically carry several million bacteria on and inside its body. Carrying a variety of disease organisms including Salmonella that causes food poisoning, and other organisms causing gastroenteritis, dysentery, tuberculosis, hepatitis, typhoid fever. Cockroaches then contaminate food products, utensils and various areas with these disease causing organisms via their droppings, cast skins, empty egg cases, dead cockroaches and vomit marks on surfaces.

Cockroaches leave faeces or droppings that are easily identifiable. The faeces of small cockroaches are black and resemble ground coffee or black pepper. Larger cockroaches leave black or brown droppings which are cylindrical in shape and have ridges down the side.

Five of the most prominent cockroach species that affect Australian homes and businesses include:

  • German Cockroaches
  • Australian Cockroaches
  • American Cockroaches
  • Oriental Cockroaches
  • Brownbanded Cockroaches

Federal Pest Control’s treatment for cockroaches is a little bit different from other pest control companies. Federal technicians do not treat a whole lot of surface areas, mainly because you will mop and wipe it away the product when you are doing your general cleaning and over a period of months the treatment is completely ineffective.

For this reason we treat the areas where the cockroaches actually breed and hide, placing the product inside the wall cavity. This way the treatment is out of reach of you and your family, your pets and also your food preparation surfaces, so it’s really safe and the good news is that you don’t have to pull anything out of the cupboards.

The length of time it takes to rid your home of a cockroach infestation depends largely upon species and size of the population.

Many over-the-counter products homeowners utilise often prove ineffective against a cockroach infestation. These pests are extremely adaptable and may even be resistant to some home treatment methods.

The most rapid and effective pest control methods are those administered by trained pest control professionals. There are several techniques and tools that can be employed or recommended by these professionals to get rid of cockroaches including:

  • Reducing cockroach attractants like pet food dishes, drains, dishwashers, and trashcans, through cleaning, maintenance and proper storage.
  • Determining the source or entry point for the cockroaches – Are they being carried into the home, or entering under doors and through open windows.
  • Using traps such as glue boards, the applications of baits and residuals to cracks/crevices, harbourage areas and the exterior of the home.

Cockroaches prefer to live in warm, dark, wet areas, like sewers and basements. They often enter structures through drains and pipes.

Cockroaches can be drawn to crumbs on the floor, food that has been left out on kitchen bench, and dirty dishes in the sink. They’re also attracted to warmth and moisture, like leaky pipes under sinks. They often come up through drain holes.
